In the old days, many centuries ago when the village of Penrose was only just taking it’s first steps, the people feared the mysteries Mother Nature held for them just outside the village boarders. Beautiful as the all this green may be when the sun is high up in the blue, the darkness of night makes the forest into a labyrinth and the swamps into black holes that you won’t notice until it’s too late. They believed the forest to be a living being with a consciousness of it’s own, a spirit of some kind.
Afraid to anger this creature the citizens of young Penrose decided a sacrificial offering would soothe souse the spirit so that it would leave the village and travellers be in peace. Once every year a young maiden had the honour of giving her life for the safety of her village. The village’s wise men would lead her into the swamps to be left there to drown (though it may have been described a bit more poetic than that, at the time).
After some times rumours started though, that the forest was still angry with them, despite the sacrifices. Men but also women disappeared in the forest, travellers and traders never returned. And some people claimed the years of sacrificial bloodshed had not sooth Mother Nature at all… the anger and sadness of all the women who’d been sent to die had only fuelled her anger. And all those who got lost to the swamps had turned into the hateful forest spirits the village people had feared so much. And to this day they take form every night, luring all those who inhabit Penrose – the descendants from those who sent them to an early grave, their friends or acquaintances, or even just an innocent bystander – to a similar fate.
Of course modern times and science considered this nothing but a superstitious ghost story and blamed the disappearances to people simply losing their way in the swamps. The citizens of Penrose gladly confirm this theory in an attempt to avoid bad publicity.
Even so, every inhabitant of Penrose will discourage you to enter the forests just before or during the night. And it might be best to heed their warning.

Burglinde Forest Rules + Map

Burglinde forest doesn’t have real rules but there are some hints like…
Getting from Meinior Mansion to the town of Penrose requires a 12 mile walk/drive over an unlit dirt road with forest left and right from you. Straying from the path or going out there in the dark is advised against.
The forest is off limits to all citizens at night. The local police patrols the roads through the forest and if they find you there, they’ll take you back to Penrose for your own safety. They don’t leave the paths though so once you go in too deep, they won’t be bothering you.


Burglinde Forest:
